The Missing Piece

By Phil Maynard February 3, 2017 I have been a fan of Alan Hirsch since early in his work with the missional movement in America.  In his book, The Forgotten Ways, Alan describes the 4 P’s of Incarnational Ministry: presence, proximity, powerlessness, and proclamation.  I think this is a terrific insight for both the missional [...]

Connect!

Forward When it comes to the big E word, we all know how to do it wrong, or how to not do it at all. But do we know how to do it right—with the unchurched, the nones, the never churched, the don’t-want-to-be-churched, or the please-leave-us-alone-happily-ever-after-unchurched? How do we share our faith with somewhat lonely, [...]

How We Create Relationships

This is, of course, a foundational practice in the church, because . . . • First time guests are much more likely [...]

By Phil Maynard September 26,2016 Every church I meet with expresses in some way a desire to reach new people and engage them in becoming growing disciples of Jesus Christ. It is also true, however, that almost every church I meet with is in decline, resulting in fewer people participating in worship, less of a [...]

An elderly woman, sitting [...]

To What Purpose?

By Phil Maynard April 14, 2016 Recently, an Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church with which I have worked sent out a memorandum that clarified how local churches should count “community service hours” self-reported by worship attendees (they use the popular nomenclature, “salty service”).  This data collection is part of an ongoing data-driven analysis [...]

Happy New Year

November 6, 2015 By Phil Maynard As we approach the release of my new Membership to Discipleship book in late November, I want to continue to give you some insights into how this book came to be.  It has been an organic outgrowth of decades of ministry work.  For years, both as a pastor of [...]
